Shape Your Way Out Of Aggression – A Breakthrough Approach
Kellie Snider, BCABA, and Jesus Rosales-Ruiz, PhD

Saturday, July 21 and Sunday, July 22, 2007
    9:00 am – 5:00pm
$95 for one day, $180 for both days

Emotions in companion animals can be both endearing and perplexing.  When emotional behaviors help to deepen our relationships with our animals, we are delighted, but when they take dangerous forms we are lost.  Canine aggression is hands-down the most serious and heartbreaking dog behavior problem facing trainers and pet owners.  The current state-of-the-art methods have not met the challenge of replacing aggressive behaviors with friendly behaviors in dogs.  Until now punishment, desensitization, counter conditioning and distraction were our best options, and the outcomes have often been slow, inconsistent or non-existent.

Scientists have traditionally viewed aggression as a product of genetics and species-determined instinct. New research from the University of North Texas has demonstrated that we have been missing an important component in the development and maintenance of emotional behaviors in animals. It turns out that aggression responds to changes in consequences. In other words, by the time it becomes a problem, aggression is learned operant behavior.

In this seminar, Dr. Rosales-Ruiz and Ms. Snider will use demonstration, discussion and videos to explain the research that revealed this and how we can use an operant shaping procedure to switch off canine aggression and replace it with desirable behavior.

Canine Body Language and Contextual Meanings

Sarah Kalnajs, owner of Blue Dog Training and Behavior, producer of the new DVD “Language of Dogs”

Saturday, September 8 and Sunday, September 9, 2007
    9:00am –5:00pm
$95 for one day, $180 for both days.

Saturday:  Dogs tell us most of what we need to know by displaying a variety of signals, some subtle and some overt, that humans commonly misread or fail to recognize. It is critical that new trainers learn to correctly recognize, understand, and interpret these body language cues in a variety of contexts.

This presentation introduces the main categories of body language, including stress, offensive (or distance increasing) signals, and appeasing (or distance decreasing) signals using high-quality video examples that include a wide range of breeds and mixes. Sequences of behavior will also be shown and discussed as these cues most commonly occur in clusters. From head to tail, body language is shown in a variety of contexts to ensure understanding. Participants will be able to apply these concepts immediately in their professional work and will be well prepared to help their clients recognize and understand these behaviors, as well.

    Sunday: To be determined.
